The International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in
Swimming, held every four years under the aegis of the
International Society of Biomechanics and the World Commission of
Sports Biomechanics, provides a forum in which research related to
swimming is reported and problems that confront swimming
practitioners are debated. This volume contains the papers
presented at the sixth symposium. The keynote addresses covered
lactate metabolism, performance determining factors and the
analysis of sprint swimming. The contributed papers range widely
across sports science, coaching and training and sports medicine.

This book contains edited and revised papers presented at the VIth
International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming.
Held under the auspices of the International Society of
Biomechanics and the World Commission of Sports Biomechanics, this
multi-disciplinary symposium was attended by delegates from 30
countries, emphasizing the international interest in this subject.
The contributions highlight the wealth of quality research being
undertaken in the field of swimming throughout the world. Three
keynote papers are included: "Lactate Metabolism for Swimming",
"Performance Determining Factors in Front Crawl Swimming", and
"Analysis of Sprint Swimming". The main contents are then grouped
into nine sections, organized by discipline: biomechanics,
electromyography, swim technique, training, lactate metabolism,
performance and physiology, medical considerations,
kinanthropometry, and psychological factors. This comprehensive
book presents recent research but also tackles some of the current
problems facing swimming practitioners. It aims to be a review for
researchers in swimming, lecturers and students on sports science
and physical education courses and sports medics and

Why am I always tired? Why can't I sleep at night? Why do I suffer from jetlag? We all have a body clock, a biological structure that controls how we feel, our mental and physical performance, and whether we are active or asleep. This is nature's response to our rhythmic environment, dominated by day and night. Though the body clock normally adjusts us to daytime activity and night time sleep, it can go wrong or be tricked by lifestyle changes. This can result in jetlag, some forms of insomnia and even depression. Keeping in time with your body clock provides clear and accessible advice on how to live with, and not against, your body clock. In a clear and accessible style, it explains how the body clock works, how and why it can work against you, and the measures you can take to optimise your feeling of health and wellbeing. It also explains the role of the body clock in illness, and how an understanding of this can increase your feeling of health. An essential book for anyone who wants to better understand their body and optimise their feeling of health and wellbeing.
Spitsbergen, the largest wilderness in Europe, is as close as you
can get to the North Pole. Each year, tens of thousands of visitors
experience the island's dramatic landscape with its fragile beauty,
including fjords, glaciers, pack-ice, the midnight sun, polar
bears, reindeer, and a fantastic abundance of bird life. But who
were the first tourists and how did they reach this uninhabited
'no-man's land?' Greetings from Spitsbergen traces their untold
story and, with the use of many unpublished photographs and
postcards from the author's own collection, presents a unique
insight into the 'golden era' of arctic tourism, which lasted until
1914.
